Background of the study
Church doctrines profoundly shape moral values and social behavior within communities. In Olorunda, the interpretation of these doctrines significantly impacts attitudes toward domestic violence. Many church teachings emphasize family unity, forgiveness, and gender roles, which can sometimes reinforce power imbalances in the household. Rigid adherence to these teachings may normalize behaviors that contribute to domestic violence, while progressive interpretations can challenge and condemn such practices (Akinola, 2023). Recent research suggests that conservative doctrinal stances may inadvertently perpetuate gender inequality, thereby increasing vulnerability to domestic abuse (Olaniyan, 2024). Additionally, alternative theological perspectives that advocate for gender equality and non-violence are emerging (Ajayi, 2025). This study investigates the relationship between church doctrines and domestic violence, analyzing how religious teachings influence social attitudes and behaviors regarding domestic abuse.
Statement of the problem
Despite the moral authority of church doctrines, domestic violence remains a significant issue in Olorunda. Prevailing interpretations of religious teachings often contribute to the normalization of gender-based violence by reinforcing traditional gender roles. Limited dialogue on alternative, non-violent interpretations exacerbates the problem. The lack of targeted research examining the direct impact of church doctrines on domestic violence hinders the development of effective intervention strategies. This study aims to investigate how specific church teachings influence attitudes toward domestic violence and to identify measures that could promote more equitable interpretations, ultimately reducing the incidence of abuse.
